Your 3-day safari itinerary
Day 1 is principally about reaching Mahale; Day 2 is for the forest trek; Day 3 involves a lake transfer and onward journey. That leaves little room for flight changes or rough lake conditions. If your schedule is tight, please consider the extra-night option that we can price separately rather than relying on an optimistic connection.
Day 1 — Arrive in Kigoma and Travel to Mahale
A Mahale safari works only when Kigoma arrival, boat availability and daylight are aligned. Meet your Capable Africa Tours contact at the agreed point, then travel by arranged boat along Lake Tanganyika towards the Mahale lodge area. The journey can take several hours depending on the boat, weather and departure point; we will not schedule a late arrival as though it were an easy same-day hop.

Practical note: Domestic flights, boat transfers and park access must be confirmed together before payment.
Ask us for the expected boat duration and where it departs; Kigoma is not the lodge doorstep. We will confirm the arrival window in writing before accepting a tight transfer schedule.
Day 2 — Guided Chimpanzee Trekking
After a briefing with the appropriate park team, head into forest with an authorised guide to look for habituated chimpanzees. The walk can be steep, humid and demanding; the time required varies with chimp locations and weather. Your guide follows park rules on viewing distance, trekking limits, illness precautions and group conduct. Return to the lakeshore to rest after the trek.

Bring shoes with good grip, light rain protection and patience. Chimpanzees are wild animals; the authorised team decides how tracking proceeds and the park rules always take priority.
Day 3 — Boat Back to Kigoma and Onward Travel
Return by pre-arranged boat towards Kigoma, allowing plenty of time for lake conditions and onward travel. A short morning walk or swim is possible only if the boat and flight schedule genuinely permit it. For many itineraries, an extra Kigoma overnight is the safer choice than assuming a same-day connection to Dar es Salaam or Arusha.
Where you stay: Tour finishes in Kigoma; optional buffer hotel if needed.
Practical note: Do not book a return flight until the boat transfer and available flight timetable have been checked.
