Where should your Tanzania safari begin?
Short answer: If you are visiting Tanzania for the first time and have five to seven safari days, start by comparing a northern circuit with Serengeti and Ngorongoro. If you have only two or three days, stay closer to Arusha or choose a carefully timed fly-in safari. For quiet wilderness and different activities, ask about southern Tanzania; for chimpanzees, plan a separate western route.
There is no single package that suits every guest. A family arriving late at Kilimanjaro Airport needs a different first day from a couple already staying in Arusha. Likewise, a traveller hoping to photograph wildebeest in the north of the Serengeti in August should not be sold a camp in the south simply because it looks attractive in a brochure.
At Capable Africa Tours, we start with your dates, the number of people travelling and the experience you hope to have. Then we arrange a route, guide, safari vehicle, accommodation and the services agreed in your written proposal. You know what is included before you confirm a booking.
| Your priority | Where to begin | What we would check with you |
|---|---|---|
| Classic first safari | Northern Tanzania | How many nights you can give Serengeti, and whether Tarangire fits the route |
| Quieter, varied wilderness | Southern Tanzania | Departure airport, park access and availability of guided activities |
| Chimpanzees or remote parks | Western Tanzania | Flight and boat connections, park permits and realistic minimum trip length |
| Flexible private game drives | Private safari | Your preferred pace, room needs and vehicle arrangements |
| Cost-conscious shared trip | Group joining safari | Confirmed departure date, sharing arrangements and what the quoted price covers |
Choose the safari style before comparing prices
Private safaris: more freedom, not automatically more luxury
On a private safari, your party has its own vehicle and driver-guide for the agreed safari days. You can take longer at a sighting when park rules and the day’s schedule allow, make room for a child’s rest, or choose a less hurried photography day. Private does not automatically mean five-star accommodation. Some guests choose a private vehicle with simple lodges because flexibility matters more to them than an expensive room.
Joining safaris: share costs and the daily schedule
Joining a group can reduce the per-person cost, especially for solo travellers, but a shared safari has a departure schedule. Ask whether the departure is confirmed, how many guests normally use the vehicle, whether you will share a room or tent, and what happens if the minimum number of participants is not reached. Capable will outline the group conditions for the trip you are considering; we would not describe an unconfirmed departure as guaranteed.
Camping, lodge or luxury: what will you actually sleep in?
Budget camping usually means tents and simpler facilities, with campsite standards varying by location. A lodge safari offers a permanent room or an equipped tented property, but some lodges are a considerable distance from the park entrance. Luxury can provide excellent comfort, yet a beautiful lodge two hours away from your morning game drive may be the wrong choice for an intensive wildlife trip. We explain the location, room type and facilities of the accommodation proposed, not just its star label.

What the major safari regions offer—and what they do not
Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire
The northern circuit is the classic choice for open plains, big cats, elephants and the chance to visit Ngorongoro Crater. It is also where road travel can be underestimated. Reaching central Serengeti from Arusha normally takes much of a day once stops, park procedures and the route through the highlands are considered. For a short holiday, it may be wiser to visit Tarangire and Ngorongoro than to add Serengeti for a single hurried night.
Serengeti’s migration herds change areas during the year. A crossing or calving event can never be promised for a particular day. We choose a camp location based on your month, the length of your stay and availability, then explain the trade-off between driving and flying.
Nyerere, Ruaha and Mikumi
Southern Tanzania deserves its own trip rather than being squeezed into a northern road circuit. Depending on the park and the operator authorised to run them, activities may include game drives, boat excursions or guided walks. Those activities are not interchangeable: some are outside the main national park and others depend on local rules, weather and safety conditions. Capable will specify the actual activity and its operator in your itinerary.
Mahale, Gombe and Katavi
Western Tanzania is a different kind of journey. Chimpanzee tracking in Mahale or Gombe is not a conventional drive-in safari from Arusha. Flights, boats, permits and changes in weather can shape the whole trip. If chimpanzees are your main reason to travel, plan the western sector first and build other experiences around the connections instead of pretending it can be added as an afternoon stop.
How many days should you book?
If you can spare only three days, choose one manageable route and be honest about where the road hours fall. Five days can make a northern itinerary worthwhile, but there will still be long transfer periods. A full week gives the guide more room to return to productive wildlife areas rather than driving to a different park every morning.
For practical day-by-day examples, including which days are mainly transfers, see our Tanzania safari itinerary planner. That guide focuses on the route and daily timing; this page helps you decide which kind of package you want to book.
| Time available | Practical approach | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| 2–3 safari days | Stay close to the starting city or use a suitable flight | Do not count arrival and departure as full wildlife days |
| 4–5 safari days | Focus on a realistic northern route or one southern destination | Keep at least one meaningful game-viewing day in the priority park |
| 6–8 safari days | Add longer Serengeti time or a more relaxed pace | Avoid changing camps unnecessarily |
| 9 days or more | Explore seasonal areas or add Zanzibar | Account for domestic flights and separate beach nights |
What should a quote from Capable Africa Tours include?
Two quotations for a ‘five-day safari’ can represent very different experiences. One may include park entry and a private vehicle; another may assume a shared vehicle and an extra overnight transfer. To compare them fairly, read the itinerary and inclusions together, not the headline price on its own.
Services we specify when included
- Pickup and drop-off locations and transfer days
- Private or shared 4×4 vehicle and guiding basis
- Named lodges, camps, room types and meals
- Park or conservation entry fees covered by the quotation
- Game drives and any separately arranged activities
- Domestic flights when expressly included
Usually separate unless stated
- International flights, visas and travel insurance
- Tips and personal purchases
- Optional balloon safaris or unlisted activities
- Accommodation upgrades not requested in advance
- Extra nights caused by changes to your international flights
We also explain how much you will pay, when payments are due, and the cancellation or amendment terms that apply to your confirmed trip. Do not rely on a generic ‘free cancellation’ promise unless it is in your written booking conditions.
Planning around the airport matters
Arriving at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)? For northern safaris, the arrival time helps decide whether the first night should be in Arusha or Moshi. A late arrival should not be sold as a full Tarangire game-drive day.
Starting in Zanzibar? We plan the flight or ferry/road connection separately, allowing for check-in and a return connection. A safari can be added before or after your Zanzibar stay, but domestic flight seats and baggage rules must be confirmed.
Ending with a beach stay? Three or four nights on Zanzibar generally feel more like a holiday than a rushed one-night stop, though the right split depends on your total days. Capable can arrange the island services listed on your final booking along with the mainland safari.
Questions guests ask before booking
Can Capable Africa Tours arrange the whole safari?
Yes. We can coordinate the guiding, vehicle, accommodation, agreed park activities and local transfers listed in the confirmed itinerary. If you would like domestic flights or Zanzibar included, ask us to show those sectors separately so nothing is assumed.
Is the Big Five guaranteed?
No. Wildlife is wild; even in productive areas, finding a leopard or a black rhino depends on conditions and luck. We will explain where particular animals are more often searched for without promising a sighting or publishing invented success percentages.
Why not put five parks into five days?
Because driving between parks can consume the hours you wanted to spend watching wildlife. A safari with fewer overnight changes and sensible lodge placement can feel much more rewarding.
When will I know the accommodation?
We can propose available properties based on your travel month and budget. The exact names, room type, meals and any alternatives should be included in your written quotation before you confirm.
Can I request a quote without knowing my dates?
Yes. Your approximate month, total number of nights and how many adults and children are travelling will let us suggest a reasonable starting route. Prices and hotel availability become firmer once you choose dates.
Tell us what sort of safari you want
Tell us your preferred month, where you will be arriving, how many people are travelling, and whether privacy, cost or comfort matters most. We will respond with a route that gives you useful wildlife time and explain any trade-offs before you book.
