Your six-day safari itinerary, explained
This is a suggested six-day route, not a guarantee of any animal sighting or an unchangeable flight schedule. Capable Africa Tours confirms overnight properties, the departure point, park entries and any air sectors when preparing your quotation. Here is how the time is actually used:
Day 1 — Tarangire for elephants and buffalo
Leave Arusha for Tarangire. The river, woodland and baobab habitat suit elephant viewing and other herbivores, with predator possibilities. This is not the day to promise a rhino sighting; every park contributes something different to the overall trip. Sleep around Karatu or Mto wa Mbu so the onward route flows west.
Overnight: Karatu / Mto wa Mbu lodge.
Travel and timing: Road approach plus first game drive.
Day 2 — Cross toward Serengeti
Drive through the highlands to central Serengeti. It is a long road stage, though wildlife can appear as you approach the plains. We choose a camp in a practical region for lion and leopard habitat rather than send you to a distant migration camp without a seasonal reason.
Overnight: Central Serengeti camp.
Travel and timing: Transfer day with possible en-route viewing.
Day 3 — Serengeti predator habitats
Explore the plains, kopjes and wooded watercourses with your guide. Lions may be found in open-country areas; leopard is often harder to see because of its habits and camouflage. We encourage patient observation rather than crowding an animal for a photograph.
Overnight: Central Serengeti camp.
Travel and timing: Full game-drive day.
Day 4 — More Serengeti field time
A second full day gives your group a chance to see different behaviors and habitats. Sometimes the most rewarding sightings are elephants at a watercourse or buffalo among the grass rather than a headline big cat. Talk to your guide about where you have already been and what you hope to see next.
Overnight: Central Serengeti camp.
Travel and timing: Full wildlife day.
Day 5 — Return to Karatu
Begin with morning game viewing before taking the longer road back through Ngorongoro. The idea is to sleep close enough for an early crater descent the next day. We do not try to fit the crater into the afternoon after crossing from Serengeti.
Overnight: Karatu / Ngorongoro highlands lodge.
Travel and timing: Long transfer with wildlife stops.
Day 6 — Ngorongoro Crater and Arusha
Explore the crater floor’s grassland, wetland and forest edges. A black rhino is possible, but may be distant or not visible at all; no ethical operator can guarantee it. Afterwards, return to Arusha, allowing a proper road margin before any onward flight.
Overnight: End in Arusha.
Travel and timing: Crater safari followed by the return drive.
What to expect for each of the Big Five
Elephants and buffalo may be encountered in several habitats, while lions and leopards depend on daily movement and observation skill. Black rhino is much less predictable and often viewed only from a distance, if at all. We would rather explain that honestly than advertise a guaranteed Big Five tally.
Ngorongoro Crater is important to this route because it offers a distinctive habitat alongside Serengeti, but spending too little time in Serengeti to add a fourth park is not always helpful. Let us know whether cats, elephants or the widest overall species list matter most to you.
What travelers should ask before booking
Will we definitely see all Big Five?
No. Wild animals are free-moving and sightings change daily. Black rhino is typically the most uncertain on this route, while leopard may remain hidden despite several drives.
Can we add another park to increase the chances?
An extra park can add habitat variety, but it also takes time away from Serengeti or the crater. We explain whether that trade-off helps with your actual wildlife priorities.
Can Capable organize a family-friendly pace?
Yes on a private safari. We can adjust start times and break lengths, although park-entry windows and long transfer distances still apply.
What makes the quotation accurate

Questions before you travel
Can I use this route at any time of year?
The route is possible in different seasons, but wildlife distribution, road access and available accommodation vary. We confirm the order of parks and overnight areas against your month of travel.
Can I finish in Zanzibar or at an airport instead of Arusha?
Usually a different endpoint is possible, but it can involve a separate domestic flight or a longer transfer. Capable will price it transparently and check the real connection before confirmation.
