For a first safari starting in Arusha, we usually favor Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro over racing through four or five parks. Six days gives you five nights on the road, but distances still matter.

Your six-day safari itinerary, explained
This is a suggested six-day route, not a guarantee of any animal sighting or an unchangeable flight schedule. Capable Africa Tours confirms overnight properties, the departure point, park entries and any air sectors when preparing your quotation. Here is how the time is actually used:
Day 1 — Arusha to Tarangire
Your guide collects you after breakfast. The route west from Arusha is straightforward, and you should reach Tarangire with useful time for your first game drive. Elephants, baobabs and the river landscape make a good introduction. Instead of driving onward for hours after the park, we suggest sleeping around Mto wa Mbu or Karatu.
Overnight: Mto wa Mbu or Karatu lodge.
Travel and timing: Roughly 2–3 hours to the park before game viewing.
Day 2 — Karatu to Serengeti
Leave after breakfast for the Ngorongoro highlands and the longer journey toward central Serengeti. Expect scenic stops and park formalities; this is not a full day of wildlife viewing. As you enter the Serengeti, your guide can turn the last part of the journey into an en-route game drive if light and arrival times permit.
Overnight: Central Serengeti tented camp.
Travel and timing: A long road day, often around 5–7 hours from Karatu with stops and road conditions.
Day 3 — Serengeti wildlife day
Wake up where the wildlife is. Your guide can work the Seronera plains, watercourses and kopje areas rather than spending the day crossing between parks. A picnic lunch keeps options open. If you are interested in big cats, say so at the briefing, but remember that even good guiding cannot make an animal appear.
Overnight: Central Serengeti tented camp.
Travel and timing: Flexible game drives with no inter-park transfer.
Day 4 — Another day in Serengeti
This is the day that makes the route worthwhile. You can start early, return to camp during the hottest hours or stay out with a packed lunch. Some guests want more time photographing a pride of lions; others prefer birds, hippos or open-plains scenery. Your guide adjusts the search within permitted roads.

Travel and timing: A full wildlife day; timings are set with the guide.
Day 5 — Serengeti to Ngorongoro highlands
Take a measured morning game drive while beginning the return toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The transfer is substantial and passes through changing landscapes. We recommend a night in Karatu or another practical highland location, so the crater descent does not start after a tiring journey from Serengeti.
Overnight: Karatu / Ngorongoro highlands lodge.
Travel and timing: Usually a half-day or longer of combined driving and stops.
Day 6 — Ngorongoro Crater and return to Arusha
Leave early for crater entry and enjoy the grassland, marsh and forest habitats below the rim. Buffalo, zebra, lion and many other animals may be present; black rhino is possible but not guaranteed. After the game drive, climb out and return toward Arusha. Arrange a late onward flight or another overnight rather than scheduling a tight departure.
Overnight: Safari ends in Arusha.
Travel and timing: Crater entry plus roughly 3–4 hours back to Arusha after exiting the conservation area.
How an Arusha start protects your safari time
If your international flight lands in the evening, spend that night in Arusha before Day 1. Trying to count the flight arrival and Tarangire game drive as the same safari day usually looks better on paper than it feels on the road. By starting rested, you can reach Tarangire at a useful hour and still enjoy the first night beyond Arusha.
The key decision is whether three Serengeti nights matter more to you than visiting Lake Manyara. We recommend retaining the Serengeti nights for a first-time guest who has dreamed of the plains. If you prefer a gentler road itinerary, ask us to replace some Serengeti distance with more time in the nearer parks.
What travelers should ask before booking
Is six days enough without a domestic flight?
Yes, provided you are comfortable with the drive to and from Serengeti. We do not describe those transfer days as full game-drive days. Guests seeking less road time can ask for a one-way flight and a revised quotation.
Should we add Lake Manyara?
It can be added by reducing a Serengeti day or changing the route. We normally explain the trade-off first: an extra park entry means less time watching wildlife in Serengeti.
What does Capable handle from Arusha?
We arrange the agreed hotel pickup, safari vehicle, driver-guide, route bookings, lodging, meals and park fees listed in the final quotation. Flights and different drop-off points are included only if written into that quote.

Questions before you travel
Can I use this route at any time of year?
The route is possible in different seasons, but wildlife distribution, road access and available accommodation vary. We confirm the order of parks and overnight areas against your month of travel.
Can I finish in Zanzibar or at an airport instead of Arusha?
Usually a different endpoint is possible, but it can involve a separate domestic flight or a longer transfer. Capable will price it transparently and check the real connection before confirmation.
