The route is built for time in the field
Five days goes quickly when you include the long road journey between Arusha and Serengeti. Trying to squeeze a further Lake Manyara game drive into the final return day would leave too little time for careful birding and the journey back to Arusha.
The route focuses on Tarangire, two nights in Serengeti and a Ngorongoro Crater visit. Lake Manyara can replace Tarangire on a customised departure, but it should not be promised as a substantial additional game drive on the return day.
Day-by-day: five days and four nights
You start from Arusha, preferably after arriving the previous day. The plan below allows two nights in Serengeti while protecting enough time for the return through Ngorongoro. Game drives are guided wildlife viewing, not walks outside designated areas.
Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire birding and wildlife
Leave Arusha after breakfast and travel toward Tarangire. Look for birds in varied habitats along the park roads, including areas known for ashy starlings, hornbills, raptors and yellow-collared lovebirds. Stop for mammals as well, but do not rush the smaller sightings. Overnight in a lodge or camp around the Tarangire–Karatu area.
Day 2: Drive to Central Serengeti
Travel through the Ngorongoro highlands toward Serengeti. This is a real transfer day, so plan photography and birdwatching stops around the driving time rather than expecting a full park day. Once in the Serengeti ecosystem, watch for secretarybirds, bustards, rollers and raptors. Overnight in Central Serengeti.
Day 3: Full day exploring Serengeti bird habitats
Use an early start and a flexible game-drive route to explore open plains, kopjes, river lines and woodland edges. Day 4: Serengeti to the Ngorongoro highlands
Use some morning time for wildlife and birds close to camp, then drive toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The journey uses much of the day. The higher, cooler landscapes provide a marked contrast with the plains. Overnight near the crater rim or in Karatu according to the booked property.
Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater and return to Arusha
Descend into Ngorongoro Crater early for wildlife and birdwatching around grassland, wetlands and forest-edge habitats. Flamingos may occur when conditions suit them, but numbers change. After the visit, return toward Arusha. This is a long day, so avoid a tight international-flight connection.
Birding targets are possibilities, not a promise
Species such as ashy starling, yellow-collared lovebird, kori bustard, secretarybird and several raptors are appropriate interests across the habitats visited, but sightings depend on local distribution and conditions. Tanzania has a rich bird list; that does not mean any five-day party will observe hundreds of species. We would rather leave room to stop and identify birds properly.
Season and equipment
Green months can bring interesting breeding activity and Palearctic migrants, while drier weather may make park travel and visibility easier. Rainfall also changes lake conditions and the distribution of waterbirds. Bring binoculars you can use comfortably for several hours, a camera with a suitable lens, a notebook or checklist, sun protection and a light layer for the highlands.
