How do you combine a Tanzania safari with Zanzibar?
Quick answer: Plan the mainland safari first according to the number of nights you want in Serengeti, Ngorongoro or another park. Then add a domestic flight or suitable onward transfer to Zanzibar and spend at least three nights on the island if you want proper beach time. A common, comfortable split is four to five safari days followed by three to five Zanzibar nights, with the international arrival and departure considered separately.
These two parts of Tanzania offer different rhythms. In the parks you may be leaving at sunrise and watching the guide scan woodland for lions. In Zanzibar, you might have breakfast with the doors open to the sea and no fixed departure until the afternoon. A good package gives space for both instead of treating the island as a one-night stopover.
Capable Africa Tours can coordinate the Tanzania services written into the final itinerary: safaris, local transfers, accommodation, game drives and any confirmed domestic flight sectors. International flights and activities that are not listed remain separate. The difference matters when you compare quotations.
Choose the right number of safari and beach days
| Total trip | Suggested balance | Works best for |
|---|---|---|
| 7 days | 3 safari days + 3 Zanzibar nights + transfer/arrival timing | A short holiday, especially with an efficient mainland route |
| 8–9 days | 4 safari days + 3–4 Zanzibar nights | Couples and first-time visitors wanting both without too many hotel changes |
| 10 days | 5 safari days + 4 Zanzibar nights, adjusted for flights | A balanced Northern Circuit safari and relaxing island finish |
| 12 days | 6–7 safari days + 4–5 Zanzibar nights | Travellers who want more Serengeti time and a slower beach stay |
The suggested split depends on whether “Day 1” is your arrival day, a full game-drive day or a flight connection. If you land in Tanzania late in the evening, count the first night separately. A holiday brochure should not call an airport transfer a full safari day.
A sample 10-day safari and Zanzibar itinerary
This route is designed as a useful starting point for travellers arriving in the Arusha area. It includes several different wildlife areas before moving to Zanzibar. Parks and lodging are adjustable; domestic flights operate to confirmed schedules and may involve intermediate stops.
Day 1 — Arrive at Kilimanjaro or Arusha
Meet your driver at the agreed airport and travel to the Arusha hotel. If you land early, a relaxed town stop may be possible, but the first evening is mainly for settling in. Your safari guide confirms pickup time, luggage arrangements and any special dietary requirements.
Day 2 — Arusha to Tarangire National Park
Drive to Tarangire and spend the day exploring the elephant country, baobab trees and seasonal river area. Stop for a picnic lunch at an appropriate site. Leave enough time to reach the overnight lodge in the Tarangire or Karatu area without a late arrival.
Day 3 — Through the Ngorongoro highlands to Serengeti
Travel via the highlands and into Serengeti National Park. The journey is longer than it looks on a map because of gates, road conditions and wildlife stops. Arrive in Central Serengeti for late-day game viewing if time permits, then dinner and overnight at the confirmed camp or lodge.
Day 4 — Full Serengeti day
Give the park a proper day. Your guide can follow resident wildlife in one productive area, pause for photography or take a longer picnic drive. Migration viewing is possible only if the herds are using the area for your dates; no crossing or predator sighting can be scheduled.
Day 5 — Serengeti to Ngorongoro highlands
Have a final morning game drive or scenic drive as you leave the Serengeti area, then travel toward Karatu or the Ngorongoro highlands. Overnight here keeps the crater visit on the next day realistic. Staying close to the crater access route is often worth more than choosing a distant property for its room category alone.
Day 6 — Ngorongoro Crater, then Arusha area
Descend into the crater for a game drive, observing park rules and the permitted access period. Afterward continue toward Arusha for an overnight near the airport or city. This is preferable to advertising a same-day crater safari plus a guaranteed last-minute flight to Zanzibar.
Day 7 — Fly to Zanzibar and settle at the beach
Transfer to the departure airport, fly to Zanzibar according to the confirmed schedule and meet the island driver on arrival. Check into a beach property in Nungwi, Kendwa, Matemwe, Paje or another chosen area. Spend the rest of the day at leisure instead of forcing in a lengthy excursion.
Day 8 — Beach day or Stone Town visit
Take the morning at your own pace. If you enjoy history and food culture, a Stone Town visit can be arranged, but check driving time from the beach hotel first. For someone who wants nothing but sea time, a full day at the resort is a perfectly sensible choice.
Day 9 — Zanzibar activities or free time
Choose a spice farm visit, snorkeling where conditions and operators allow, or a relaxed beach day. Water activities depend on tide, wind and sea conditions. Tell us in advance if you have young children, limited swimming confidence or want a private excursion.
Day 10 — Departure from Zanzibar
Breakfast, checkout and private transfer to Zanzibar airport as listed in the confirmed booking. The transfer time is based on the hotel's location and your flight; a beach stay in the northeast can require a very different departure plan from a night in Stone Town.
If you already have a return flight from Dar es Salaam or Kilimanjaro instead of Zanzibar, we can adjust the order and last transfer. Book the final international routing before committing to non-refundable domestic flights.

Serengeti to Zanzibar: direct flight or connection?
On some dates there are scheduled flights from Serengeti airstrips to Zanzibar, sometimes with stops at other airstrips. On other dates a connection through Arusha or another airport is more practical. Availability changes by airline, route and travel season. “Direct” should never be assumed until the flight itinerary has been checked; even one ticket can include intermediate stops.
Choosing to fly directly out of Serengeti can save backtracking by road and free up a beach night. But the airstrip departure has to fit the camp location and your final safari drive. If you have a crater visit at the end of the safari, an Arusha-area overnight and next-day Zanzibar flight may make the overall holiday calmer.
Small aircraft often have stricter baggage requirements, especially for hard-shell suitcases and heavy camera equipment. We give you the airline's actual allowance once the booking is confirmed.
Which Zanzibar beach is right after safari?
| Area | What it feels like | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| Nungwi and Kendwa | More restaurants, activity and popular beach atmosphere | Often chosen by guests prioritising easier swimming conditions; tides still vary |
| Matemwe | Quieter northeast-coast stays, suitable for couples and slow travel | Beach and water access can be strongly affected by the tides |
| Paje and Jambiani | Laid-back east coast, cafés, kitesurfing and wide tidal beaches | Water can retreat a long way at low tide; check the hotel location |
| Stone Town | Historical streets, food, architecture and convenient cultural visits | Best for a city-style stay rather than a classic all-day swimming beach holiday |
The closest hotel to a famous beach is not always the best choice. Ask whether the property is right on the sand or across a road, whether meals are included, what happens at low tide and whether the room layout works for your family.
What do Tanzania safari and Zanzibar packages cost?
The quotation changes with safari nights, vehicle type, domestic flights, time of year and your Zanzibar hotel. A private vehicle for two guests costs more per person than the same vehicle shared by a family of five. A premium Serengeti camp can change the total more than one added beach night. And an all-inclusive island resort is a different meal product from a bed-and-breakfast boutique hotel.
We do not advertise one universal per-person rate because a seven-day joining safari with three-star beach accommodation is not comparable to a twelve-day private luxury holiday. Instead, ask for the quote to show the safari section, domestic flight section, Zanzibar hotel nights and the services on the island separately. It is easier to see where a change in budget is possible.
What's included, and what should you budget separately?
Normally included when written into your itinerary
- Safari 4x4, driver-guide and fuel
- Selected safari accommodation and meals
- Listed national park and conservation fees
- Game drives and agreed mainland transfers
- Domestic flights specifically named in your booking
- Zanzibar airport pickup and drop-off when quoted
- Island accommodation and its agreed meal plan
- Any Zanzibar excursions explicitly listed
Usually excluded unless booked
- International flights and visas
- Travel insurance and personal medication
- Optional balloon flight in Serengeti
- Alcohol and premium drinks outside your meal plan
- Diving, snorkeling or dhow trips not listed
- Tips, laundry and personal purchases
- Extra nights or transfers caused by personal changes
There is no single “all-inclusive” standard across Tanzania's lodges and Zanzibar hotels. The written meal plan can be full board in the bush and breakfast only on the island. If you want dinner, drinks or private transfers included, ask for those items to be added before deposit.
When should you travel?
Many travellers choose June through October for generally drier safari conditions and a busy beach season. January and February can work particularly well for travellers interested in southern Serengeti or Ndutu calving areas, but exact wildlife distribution follows rain. Zanzibar stays warm throughout the year, though seasonal rains and monsoon winds affect comfort and some marine activities.
Consider the experience you want most. If the safari is the main event, choose dates and camp locations based on the wildlife region, then fit Zanzibar around them. If a family reunion or beach wedding sets the dates, we can choose a more reliable safari route for that month instead of promising a specific migration event.
Frequently asked questions about safari and Zanzibar trips
Can I go to Zanzibar directly after Serengeti?
Sometimes. Flight routing depends on airstrip, airline and travel date, and an itinerary may contain intermediate stops. We confirm it before you pay.
Is three nights in Zanzibar enough?
It is a reasonable minimum for a short beach extension. Four or five nights are more relaxed if you want Stone Town and a boat or snorkeling activity as well as resort time.
Are the Zanzibar hotels all-inclusive?
Not automatically. Hotels may offer bed and breakfast, half board, full board or all-inclusive arrangements. Your quote will specify the exact meal plan.
Can young children do both safari and beach?
Yes, with an age-appropriate safari pace and suitable hotel rooms. We usually recommend fewer lodge changes and time to rest between activities.
Should I start with the safari or Zanzibar?
Either order works. Safari first is popular because the beach becomes a rest at the end, but flight schedules, hotel availability and international departure airport may favour the reverse.
Is a Zanzibar spice tour included?
Only when listed. Stone Town, spice farms, snorkeling and sunset dhow cruises can be selected as optional additions.
