Start with the nights you can spend on safari
Quick answer: If Serengeti matters most, allow enough time for the journey there and back—or consider an internal flight. For three days from Arusha, Tarangire and Ngorongoro are often a more comfortable choice. Five days can include central Serengeti with careful routing. Seven days gives you more actual game-viewing time and flexibility.
One detail catches many first-time visitors by surprise: a five-day itinerary does not mean five full days inside national parks. The pickup, drive to the first lodge, long transfers between regions and final journey to the airport all use part of the available time. The examples below show how those travel days affect the experience.

A realistic three-day northern safari from Arusha
If you have three days after arriving in Arusha, I would normally look at Tarangire and Ngorongoro before suggesting Serengeti. You keep more time for game drives and fewer hours on dusty transfer roads.
Day 1 — Arusha to Tarangire
Leave after breakfast with your Capable driver-guide. The journey to Tarangire commonly takes around two to three hours before park entry, depending on your pickup point, traffic and stops. Spend the middle of the day among baobabs, river habitats and areas where elephants are often seen. After the drive, continue to an agreed lodge or camp near Karatu or the park area.
Day 2 — Ngorongoro Crater
Set out early for the conservation area. The crater descent and game drive need to fit the park’s rules and access schedule. Keep expectations sensible: there may be buffalo, lions and large grazers, but a black rhino is not something any guide can guarantee. Sleep at the agreed highlands or Karatu property.
Day 3 — Return to Arusha
Return by road with stops arranged around your onward plans. If you have a late onward flight, an additional visit may be possible, but I would not promise a second full national-park game drive before an early departure. The return transfer must be shown clearly in the itinerary.
This option is particularly useful if you are coming down from a Kilimanjaro climb and want a manageable wildlife trip before flying home.
Five days: when you want Serengeti but cannot stay a full week
Five days can work, but it is not a slow safari. The sensible question is whether you would rather see another park briefly or give that day to Serengeti. For many guests, I would protect the Serengeti time first.
Day 1 — Arusha to Tarangire; overnight near Karatu
Start with Tarangire rather than driving straight to Serengeti. You get a genuine game drive and finish close enough to continue west the next day. The exact overnight property makes a difference, so it should be named before confirmation.
Day 2 — Karatu through the highlands to central Serengeti
This is a long travel day through Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Wildlife may be seen along the route, but it would be misleading to sell the transfer as a full Serengeti game drive. Arrive at the camp in time for the evening schedule where road and park conditions allow.
Day 3 — Full day in Serengeti
Keep today mainly for the wildlife. Your guide can adjust the drive based on sightings and your interests. If you are focused on photography, plan rests and light carefully. If migration is your priority, the camp location must reflect the season, and sightings remain unpredictable.
Day 4 — Serengeti back toward Karatu
Travel east again, with wildlife viewing where practical during the journey. This is another substantial road day. Guests who dislike long drives may prefer to pay for a suitable domestic flight instead, subject to flight schedules and final route.
Day 5 — Ngorongoro Crater and back to Arusha
Leave early, descend for the permitted crater visit and continue to Arusha in the afternoon or evening. This day is demanding. We would check your departure flight carefully before offering it; if you need to be at the airport early, add an Arusha night or change the itinerary.
Alternative: if your priority is two full days in Serengeti, skip Tarangire and spend longer in the plains. The trip may be more rewarding than trying to tick off a fourth destination.
Seven days: more wildlife time and a calmer pace
If you have a week, you can avoid rushing every morning. An extra night in Serengeti often adds more value than a new park name on the brochure.
Day 1 — Arusha to Tarangire
Start with elephants, baobabs and a guided game drive. Stay near the route toward Ngorongoro rather than doubling back unnecessarily.
Day 2 — Travel to Serengeti
Cross the highlands and enter Serengeti. This remains a transfer-heavy day, even if you see animals along the road.
Day 3 — Serengeti game drives
A full day allows the guide to choose locations without racing toward another overnight stop.
Day 4 — Another full Serengeti day
Use the extra time for a different habitat or seasonal area. Moving a long distance north simply because ‘migration’ appears in the package title is not always a good use of this day.
Day 5 — Serengeti to the Ngorongoro highlands
Make the return drive with sensible stops and overnight near the crater route.
Day 6 — Ngorongoro Crater; overnight near Karatu
Visit the crater early, observing the conservation regulations and your planned exit time. Then relax at the overnight property.
Day 7 — Return via a suitable stop to Arusha
Use the final day for the transfer, with a possible short visit only if your onward travel allows. Your airport deadline has priority over adding one more activity.
When should you consider flying instead of driving?
A domestic flight can spare a repeated long drive, particularly if you are ending the safari in Serengeti or continuing to Zanzibar. But a flight is not automatically included in a safari quote, and an airstrip arrival still needs local transfers. Luggage restrictions are usually tighter on small aircraft than on international flights.
We would compare the complete journey: vehicle days, lodge locations, airstrip pickup, baggage, flight timetable and your international departure. If a road journey adds useful wildlife viewing, you may prefer to keep it; if it only repeats a long transfer, flying can be worth the additional cost.
Your travel month changes which part of Serengeti makes sense
A safari described simply as 'Serengeti migration' is incomplete without the month and region. Herds move through the ecosystem; in some periods the southern plains and Ndutu area are of interest, and in others travellers focus on central, western or northern regions. River crossings and newborn animals cannot be scheduled like a hotel check-in.

Questions about choosing a Tanzania safari itinerary
Can I fit Serengeti and Ngorongoro into three days by road?
It is physically possible to create very compressed routes, but from Arusha you can spend a large share of the time in the vehicle. We would first discuss a fly-in option or suggest a more compact park combination if wildlife time and comfort matter most.
Is a private safari better for families?
It can be easier to plan rest breaks and adjust the daily pace, especially with young children or older guests. The lodge still needs to have suitable rooms, and child-age restrictions on specific activities must be checked.
Which day is best for the Ngorongoro Crater?
It depends on your route and overnight location. An early start from the highlands is often easier than driving from a distant camp and attempting the crater late in the day.
Can we add Zanzibar at the end?
Yes, but flight times and island check-in must be accounted for. Three or more beach nights usually give a more restful finish than arriving in the afternoon and leaving the next morning.
Are animal sightings guaranteed?
No. Your guide uses experience and current conditions, but big cats, rhinos and migration events remain unpredictable.
