What Do You Actually Get With a Private Safari?
Quick answer: A private safari means the booked group has its own safari vehicle and driver-guide. You decide together how long to stop at a sighting and when to take breaks, subject to park rules and the confirmed daily route. It does not automatically mean luxury accommodation.
Private does not need to mean extravagant. A couple can choose comfortable mid-range tented camps; a family can pick connected rooms or a lodge with a pool; photographers can request additional space in the vehicle. Each choice changes the cost. The important part is knowing what is included before the safari begins.
Our sample seven-day route starts and ends in Arusha and makes room for Tarangire, multiple Serengeti nights and Ngorongoro Crater. It keeps the driving sensible and leaves the last day clear enough for a return journey.

Your Seven-Day Itinerary
This is a workable planning example. Exact lodge locations, operating hours, transfers and weather determine the confirmed daily schedule; we will send you the final route before booking.
Day 1 — Arusha to Tarangire
We collect you from the agreed Arusha address and drive to Tarangire. This is a useful first park: acacia woodland and baobab scenery are a change from the city, and elephant family groups are one of its main draws. Your guide can move slowly when the viewing is good or continue to another sector if the day is quiet. Lunch is a picnic or a lodge meal as booked. Overnight near Tarangire or in the Manyara area.
Day 2 — Tarangire morning and a quieter Karatu afternoon
You may choose another morning in Tarangire or spend longer at breakfast and transfer toward Karatu. That decision is agreed beforehand because park-fee validity and lodge location matter. Stop for lunch on the way, then check in at the confirmed property. The lighter afternoon is useful when traveling with children or guests who dislike continuous driving.
Day 3 — Karatu via Ngorongoro highlands to Serengeti
Leave after breakfast for the route through Ngorongoro Conservation Area toward Serengeti. It is a long but scenic travel day with gate formalities and permitted stops. You will have some game viewing after entering the park, but the journey is not a substitute for a full Serengeti day. Overnight in a camp near the area you plan to explore tomorrow.
Day 4 — Serengeti game drives, adjusted to your interests
This is a full day in the Serengeti. You may leave with a packed breakfast, break in camp at midday, or stay out with lunch if the group prefers. Photographers can spend longer with one sighting; families may prefer shorter sessions with frequent water and toilet stops. The guide works within park rules while adapting the day to you.
Day 5 — A second Serengeti day
A second full day means there is no pressure to turn every sighting into a quick photograph. Use the morning for a different sector, focus on elephants or big cats, or simply return to productive habitat. We can discuss seasonal herds before selecting your camp, but no migration event or particular species is guaranteed.
Day 6 — Serengeti to Ngorongoro or Karatu
Start with a measured game drive as you leave Serengeti, then travel to the Ngorongoro area. There may be time for an approved viewpoint; your lodge and road conditions decide the schedule. Arrive with time to rest rather than promising a late crater descent after a long drive.
Day 7 — Ngorongoro Crater then Arusha
Descend into the crater in the morning for the wildlife drive, following park timing and access rules. Buffalo, lions, elephants and many grazing animals may be seen. Black rhino is possible but not something anyone can promise. After the crater visit and lunch, return to Arusha. If you prefer a relaxed finish, we can book an extra hotel night outside the seven safari days.

Private vs. Group Joining: What Changes?
| Choice | Best fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Private vehicle | Families, couples, photography and custom stops | Higher per-person vehicle cost for very small parties |
| Group joining | Solo travelers and cost-conscious guests on set dates | Fixed departure, shared seating and less control over pauses |
| Fly-in private | Guests who need to cut overland transfer time | Additional airfare and luggage restrictions |
Families, Older Travelers and Different Energy Levels
Please tell us children’s ages, whether anyone has mobility restrictions, and how long people are comfortable sitting each day. A private safari is often easiest when the group includes several generations. We can suggest nearby lodges, a midday rest or fewer park changes.
A safari vehicle still has steps and uneven ground around some camps. If you need step assistance, a specific seat arrangement or easy-access rooms, discuss this during the quotation. We will confirm services with the actual property instead of assuming every lodge is accessible.
Your Guide and Vehicle
The standard arrangement is a private 4×4 vehicle with a professional Tanzania driver-guide. We clarify whether the vehicle has a pop-up roof, how many people share each row and whether children need special seating. Your booking should also state pickup and drop-off locations.
Private guiding is not permission to drive off-road, approach animals too closely or ignore park opening hours. A good guide finds useful viewing opportunities while keeping the safari respectful and safe.
Accommodation: Spend Where It Matters
You may want a pool after a long day, or you may prefer a simple camp with excellent access to the next morning’s wildlife area. We compare named properties for both comfort and location. Two lodges described as luxury can have very different meal plans, game-drive arrangements and transfer distances.
For a couple celebrating a honeymoon, tell us if privacy or a particular room type matters. For a family, we check whether rooms connect, whether an extra bed is possible and what the child policies actually say.
Can You Change the Itinerary During the Trip?
Minor game-drive decisions are usually flexible. Moving to a different park, changing a lodge or adding an air transfer is different: it can affect prepaid fees, availability and the whole route. We agree substantial changes in writing instead of presenting every possible wish as a free adjustment.
Your travel month is especially important for Serengeti camp choice. The Great Migration is seasonal; if the herds are far from the selected area, it can be sensible to focus on resident wildlife instead of sacrificing days to long transfers.
How the Price Works
Price is influenced by group size, vehicle use, season, lodging, crater and park fees and transfers. Two guests using one car share the cost between two people; six guests may have a lower per-person vehicle cost, but rooming and comfort needs can change the total.

Questions Guests Ask Before Booking
Will the vehicle be exclusively ours?
Yes when the written package is confirmed as private; there will be no unrelated joining passengers.
Can we request a slower pace?
Yes. Tell us in advance so we can place nights well and reduce unnecessary park changes.
Are park fees included?
They are included only when listed in the final quotation. We itemize the applicable park and conservation fees.
Can we add a Serengeti balloon flight?
It may be arranged separately according to operating area, age rules, weather and availability.

Yes, subject to the starting-time and additional transfer arrangements confirmed in writing.
Can we travel with young children or grandparents?
Often yes. We discuss ages, stamina and accommodation requirements to plan a manageable route.
