Leaving Zanzibar for a mainland safari is possible, but four days disappear quickly if flights do not match the parks you want to visit. This sample uses a Serengeti arrival by air, a full Serengeti day and a road connection to Ngorongoro. Your 4-day safari itinerary
You begin at a Zanzibar hotel and fly towards Serengeti, but the last day ends on the mainland in this sample. Returning to Zanzibar on Day 4 is not automatically included or feasible. We will resolve that before you confirm flights or pay for accommodation.
Day 1 — Fly from Zanzibar to the Serengeti

After landing at the designated Serengeti airstrip, meet your driver-guide and begin game viewing during the daylight hours remaining. Flight timetables and baggage limits determine how much of the first day can be spent in the park.

Practical note: Flights and airstrip transfers must be booked before calling this a confirmed departure.
We will tell you which airport to use and where the guide meets you on landing. An arrival flight that lands in the afternoon cannot deliver a full first-day game drive, so we plan accordingly.
Day 2 — Full Day in Central Serengeti
Enjoy a full wildlife day with stops around plains, kopjes and wooded river courses. Lions, giraffes, elephants and antelope are among the possibilities, but a particular encounter can never be promised. A picnic arrangement may save a long return to camp at midday.
Where you stay: Same Serengeti camp.
Practical note: No fixed-date Great Migration crossing can be guaranteed.
This is your main uninterrupted wildlife day. Ask to spend longer around an interesting sighting instead of racing through Serengeti just to tick animals off a list.
Day 3 — Serengeti to the Ngorongoro Highlands
Leave the Serengeti on the road towards Karatu, allowing several hours for game viewing en route, road travel and conservation-area procedures. The route is scenic but long. Staying in Karatu positions your party near the crater for an earlier and more useful final safari day.
Where you stay: Karatu lodge.
Practical note: This is a transfer day, not a second full day of Serengeti game drives.
Leaving the park and crossing the highlands takes time. We choose the Karatu lodge so you do not have to attempt an unrealistic late drive after your game viewing.
Day 4 — Ngorongoro Crater and Mainland Finish
Start before sunrise if practical, visit the crater floor with your guide and enjoy the wildlife and picnic before continuing to Arusha. Connecting back to Zanzibar on the same day is possible only if a suitable flight exists with a safe transfer margin; do not book a late-afternoon connection on assumption. Capable can arrange an additional night or a revised fly-out route where needed.
Where you stay: Safari finishes in Arusha; Zanzibar return flight or extra night only as confirmed.

Your onward travel is the key decision. We first check the likely crater exit and road journey before recommending a flight back to Zanzibar that evening.
Which airstrip and airport will you use?
Serengeti has multiple airstrips. The one listed on your ticket must match the region where your camp and guide operate. We confirm the flight, baggage limit and connection with you rather than using “Serengeti airport” as an imprecise placeholder.
Why the return flight is the hard part
A crater excursion plus transfer to Arusha takes most of Day 4. An airline timetable may not support a safe Zanzibar flight connection afterwards. Guests can finish in Arusha, take a later suitable flight where available, or add a separate overnight.
When four days is too short
If you want a slow safari, more Serengeti regions or guaranteed time in Zanzibar afterward, add a night. A flight-delayed first day cannot magically be converted into full game-viewing hours.

A Serengeti camp near the arrival airstrip can preserve game-drive time on Day 1. A Karatu overnight on Day 3 is intended to make an early Ngorongoro visit possible. Ask us to show the transfer from your Zanzibar hotel, the flight sector, all overnight locations and the precise endpoint on Day 4.
