Your six-day safari itinerary, explained
This is a suggested six-day route, not a guarantee of any animal sighting or an unchangeable flight schedule. Capable Africa Tours confirms overnight properties, the departure point, park entries and any air sectors when preparing your quotation. Here is how the time is actually used:
Day 1 — Arusha to Tarangire woodland
Drive to Tarangire and slow the vehicle down. The woodland, river areas and open savannah support very different birds, from smaller insect-eaters to raptors. Your guide can explain the difference between an ordinary game drive and a birding day: you may spend 20 minutes with one difficult identification rather than drive straight to the next elephant herd.
Overnight: Tarangire area or Mto wa Mbu lodge.
Travel and timing: Arusha road approach, then afternoon birding.
Day 2 — More of Tarangire, not another rushed park
Return to a different part of Tarangire for early light and fresh habitats. Species activity changes with rainfall and time of day, and the second visit helps avoid chasing every sighting on Day 1. Look along riverside and open-country areas where park access allows. In the afternoon, continue to Mto wa Mbu or Karatu.
Overnight: Mto wa Mbu / Karatu lodge.
Travel and timing: Second Tarangire session and onward transfer.
Day 3 — Lake Manyara forest and lake-edge habitats
Lake Manyara adds a different experience: groundwater forest, woodland and shoreline opportunities, depending on seasonal water levels and accessible roads. Flamingos may be present but not always close or visible. Ask your guide to identify calls and explain feeding behavior rather than promise a particular species list.
Overnight: Mto wa Mbu / Karatu lodge.
Travel and timing: A focused Lake Manyara day; no long inter-park journey.
Day 4 — Ngorongoro highlands
Spend time among highland habitats around Karatu and the Ngorongoro approach, observing what can be seen legally from permitted areas. Cooler elevations support different birdlife from the dry Tarangire plains. We arrange any guided walk only where allowed and with the required guide or permission; there is no assumption of an unrestricted walking safari.
Overnight: Karatu / Ngorongoro highlands lodge.
Travel and timing: Shorter local drives and permitted observation stops.
Day 5 — Ngorongoro Crater habitats
Descend early into the crater for grassland, marsh and forest-edge species alongside the larger mammals. Birdwatchers often find the wetlands fascinating, but the actual species mix depends on water levels and season. Respect traffic and stopping rules and use binoculars before asking the guide to reposition the vehicle.
Overnight: Karatu lodge.

Day 6 — Final highland birding and Arusha
Use a measured morning for species you have missed in accessible highland or woodland habitats, then return to Arusha. We do not build an extra distant national park into a day that already has a departure transfer. If your flight is early, we switch this morning to a direct transfer and explain the change upfront.
Overnight: Tour ends in Arusha.
Travel and timing: Short local session and road return.
Why habitat choice matters more than park count
If your target is a particular group of birds, tell us before we choose the hotels. Waterbirds, woodland specialists and highland species use different habitats. Lake levels and migratory seasons can also change the experience dramatically, so an honest itinerary leaves room to spend more time where activity is actually good.
A birding guide who is willing to stop for calls and explain identification is more valuable than an itinerary that adds Serengeti merely for recognition. We have therefore chosen the Tarangire–Manyara–Ngorongoro area for this example, with more patient early sessions and fewer transfer hours.
What travelers should ask before booking
Do you guarantee particular birds or flamingos?
No. Seasonal water levels and migration alter what is present. Tell us your target species and month; the guide can explain realistic opportunities and suitable habitat.
Should we bring our own binoculars?
Yes if you have them. A field guide, spare batteries and a camera with a suitable lens are useful; do not assume specialist optics are included unless stated.
Why not include Serengeti?
It is possible, but doing so adds a long road transfer in a short birdwatching schedule. We can quote a Serengeti version for guests whose targets are open-plains raptors and bustards.

Your final itinerary is coordinated by our Tanzania team: the confirmed vehicle, guide, lodges or camps, park activities, planned meals, and agreed transfers are combined into one written proposal. You will receive the actual services and their conditions before paying a deposit.

A private vehicle is not automatically part of a group-joining fare, and a photographed lodge is not a guaranteed property assignment. Capable will state the service basis that applies to your booking.
Questions before you travel
Can I use this route at any time of year?
The route is possible in different seasons, but wildlife distribution, road access and available accommodation vary. We confirm the order of parks and overnight areas against your month of travel.
Can I finish in Zanzibar or at an airport instead of Arusha?
Usually a different endpoint is possible, but it can involve a separate domestic flight or a longer transfer. Capable will price it transparently and check the real connection before confirmation.
