Quick answer: is this five-day safari right for you?
Combine Tarangire for elephants and buffalo, two nights in Serengeti for lion and possible leopard, and Ngorongoro Crater for a further variety of wildlife and a possible black rhino sighting. The rarest member on this route is often black rhino; sightings depend on luck, visibility and wildlife movement.
What you are booking
When people ask us for the Big Five, we start by being clear about what the term means—and what it cannot promise. Lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and black rhino live in different habitats and are not equally easy to find. Five days can put you in promising areas, particularly Tarangire, Central Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, but it is not a guarantee that you will see all five. A good safari leaves time for the animals you do encounter instead of turning the trip into a frantic checklist.
| Planning detail | What you should know |
|---|---|
| Duration | 5 days / 4 nights; the first and final days include travel. |
| Best suited to | First-time wildlife travelers hoping to see the Big Five while enjoying a broad range of animals and scenery. |
| Overnight plan | Tarangire/Karatu (night 1); Central Serengeti (nights 2–3); Karatu/highlands (night 4). |
| Black rhino | Possible in Ngorongoro Crater, usually less predictable than lion, buffalo or elephant. |
| Viewing ethics | Never chase or corner an animal for a photograph; follow park rules and guide instructions. |
| Important trade-off | The Big Five are a wildlife objective, not an itemized result we can deliver or refund based on sightings. |

Day-by-day itinerary: five days and four nights
This is our practical planning route. Capable Africa Tours confirms your accommodation, pickup time, transport arrangements and park sequence for your actual dates; it is not a fixed wildlife-sighting promise.
Day 1 — Tarangire: elephant country
Leave Arusha and enter Tarangire for your first game drive. Elephants are an important reason to visit, and buffalo may be encountered as well, particularly where grazing and water suit them. Lions can occur too, but we do not spend the entire day chasing a reported cat. Your guide will also show the landscape, antelopes and abundant birdlife that make the park special.
Overnight / finish: Overnight in the Tarangire–Karatu area.
Day 2 — Central Serengeti and its predator habitats
The road through Ngorongoro highlands is long, so we leave early. Once in Serengeti, begin watching the open plains, woodland edges and kopjes where lion activity can occur. Leopards are much more elusive and are often associated with areas offering cover. A quick sighting from another vehicle is never guaranteed to remain there by the time you arrive.
Overnight / finish: First Serengeti night at the confirmed camp.
Day 3 — Full day for predators and plains wildlife
Start early and allow the guide to judge where patience is worthwhile. You may see lions resting, herds of zebra and wildebeest, giraffes, buffalo and perhaps cheetahs. A leopard can be a highlight, but it is not the only measure of a successful day. We aim for respectful viewing and time to notice animal behavior.
Overnight / finish: Second night in Serengeti, preferably without changing camp.
Day 4 — Final Serengeti search, then Ngorongoro
You may have a chance to revisit a productive area near camp before heading toward the highlands. We will not keep the group in the park so late that the return drive becomes unsafe. Your guide can use this transfer to explain why habitat and season matter more than claims of fixed sighting percentages.
Overnight / finish: Overnight in Karatu or the crater highlands.
Day 5 — Ngorongoro Crater and the rhino question
Descend into the crater early, exploring grasslands and other habitats where lion, buffalo and elephant may be found. Black rhino are present but can be distant, concealed or simply not visible during the visit. If you do not see one, the crater is still a remarkable wildlife landscape. Return to Arusha after the game drive.
Overnight / finish: Final drop-off in Arusha or another pre-agreed point.
Where do the five animals fit?
Elephant: particularly Tarangire and sometimes Serengeti or Ngorongoro. Buffalo: several parks. Lion: a possibility across the route, with good habitat in Serengeti and the crater. Leopard: elusive, often demanding patience. Black rhino: the most difficult for most visitors, and the crater offers an opportunity, not certainty.
Why we do not publish a Big Five success percentage
Without a transparent dataset of actual trips, seasons and definitions of sightings, a “95% chance” is an advertisement rather than meaningful evidence. Our guides plan wildlife viewing in suitable habitats, explain conditions and protect time for observation.
Photographs and respectful distances
Wildlife safety and park regulations come before any photo. Do not pressure a driver to leave roads, crowd a cat or block a crossing. A responsible guide may choose to wait quietly or move away from a congested sighting.
How Capable Africa Tours arranges your safari
We prepare the Tanzania ground arrangements shown in your final itinerary: the agreed pickup, professional guiding, safari vehicle, the named overnight accommodation, game drives, and the park or conservation fees listed in the quotation. We also explain any transfer or flight that is part of your selected route.
You will receive the proposed route, accommodation details and a written price before confirming. If you need a slower pace, family room, different finish point or a specific wildlife focus, tell us while the trip is still being planned. We will not silently treat an optional service as included.
What is included—and what is separate?
We show inclusions and exclusions separately because “all inclusive” can mean very different things at different lodges. Your signed quotation is the final reference.
Included when confirmed
- Professional driver-guide and safari vehicle stated in the booked plan
- Accommodation for four nights at the confirmed level and locations
- Meals explicitly shown on each day of the itinerary
- Park and conservation charges explicitly listed on the final quotation
- Safari activities and road transfers written in the confirmed programme
Normally separate
- International flights, entry visas and personal travel insurance
- Guide and camp staff gratuities, personal shopping and laundry unless included
- Balloon flights, premium drinks and separately requested activities
- Domestic flights and additional airport transfers unless quoted
- Extra hotel nights, itinerary changes and services not stated in writing
How much time will be spent driving?
A safari day on the Northern Circuit is not the same as a short city transfer. From Arusha to Tarangire, travelers commonly allow roughly two to three hours before park activities, depending on the starting hotel, road conditions and stops. Reaching Central Serengeti by road from the Karatu/highlands area takes a substantial part of a day. The crater visit and onward return also require most of the final day.
These are planning indications, not promised transfer times. For a Zanzibar fly-in or a Kilimanjaro Airport arrival, flight schedules and check-in time matter just as much as the road journey. Your Capable Africa Tours itinerary will show the actual order of transfers and the chosen overnight locations.
Accommodation and prices: what changes the quote?
A five-day safari price changes with the season, the number of guests sharing a vehicle, private versus shared guiding, the locations and standards of overnight stays, park fees, and any domestic flight segments. A cheaper camp far from the next morning’s wildlife area can cost you valuable time, so we compare the whole route rather than the nightly room rate alone.
We provide an itemized quote based on your dates, passenger count and preferred accommodation. Any published “from” price is an indication, not a confirmed amount for every traveler. Park fees and flight schedules can change, so ask for the current figures before transferring money.
Questions travelers ask before booking
Can you guarantee we see the Big Five?
No. We can guide you through suitable habitats, but all animals are wild and sightings are unpredictable.
Which animal is hardest to see?
Black rhino is often the most difficult of the Big Five on this route.
Should we skip Tarangire and spend more time in Serengeti?
That is possible, but it changes the elephant and landscape variety. We will discuss the balance before booking.
Is this suitable for children?
Yes with an age-appropriate pace. A private vehicle can make breaks and shorter drives easier.
Does the itinerary include Ngorongoro Crater entry?
The confirmed quotation must specify park, conservation and crater service fees rather than assuming they are covered.
What should you send us to plan this properly?
Send your travel month or exact dates, number of adults and children, the ages of any young travelers, your real starting location and arrival flight if relevant. Tell us the accommodation standard you would enjoy, whether you prefer a private vehicle, and your main wildlife or comfort priorities.
Capable Africa Tours will respond with a route and written quotation matched to those details. We will identify which services are included, which flights or transfers need confirmation, and what the final day can realistically accommodate.
